We Finally Hit the Road – For Real This Time

After months (okay, years) of dreaming, building, packing, purging, and prepping… we’ve finally left the house — and as of last night, we made it all the way to North Bay, Ontario!
It still feels surreal.
Earlier this week, we pushed through a massive final stretch: clearing out the house completely, getting it ready for renters, and finally getting the bus insured (both ways!). At times it felt like we were never going to dig our way out of the to-do list. But somehow — exhausted and exhilarated — we did.
We didn’t leave Sutton until after dinner on Friday, so we made a short first hop to my parents’ place, just two hours away. It was the perfect soft start… until we woke up freezing. Our diesel heater wasn’t working.
It took all morning and some serious detective work before Simon figured it out: the heater draws from the bus’s fuel tank, and with only a quarter tank left, it wasn’t getting any diesel. A simple fix, but not without a lesson (and a little stress).
Luckily, being at my parents’ gave us the gift of one last slow morning and a shared meal together — a pause we didn’t know we needed.
Since then, we’ve been making our way north, and last night we found a peaceful boondocking spot through the Harvest Hosts app — a resource that connects travelers like us with farms, wineries, and other beautiful spots to park for the night.
This was the view we woke up to this morning:

Moments like this are already reminding us why we chose this journey. Quiet mornings, ever-changing scenery, and the freedom to go at our own pace.
We’re not just on the road — we’re in it.
More soon — from somewhere further down the map. 💛
