Waffles, Trails & Slopes — A Day to Remember in Fernie

Saturday was one of those days that fills your heart and leaves your legs just the right kind of tired. It started early with a chilly run through Fernie’s stunning recreational trail network. Kuna and I set out first thing, and within minutes, I was completely in love. The trail winds gently along the river with breathtaking mountain views at every turn. People you pass smile and say hello—it feels like you're part of something, even as a stranger passing through.

When I got back to the Pink Sloth, Simon and the girls were waiting for me… with fresh, warm waffles! Apparently, there had been a family vote while I was gone, and waffles had won—again. They had made them the day before and decided it was worth repeating. I’m definitely not complaining.

I told them all about the trail, and Arielle was instantly curious. We grabbed our bikes and headed out to explore more of it together. At some point, we got turned around (some trails were closed), and let’s just say thank goodness for GPS! We eventually made our way back, just in time for lunch.

Then came the ski part of our trifecta day. We managed to squeeze in the last couple of hours on the mountain. The weather didn’t really cooperate—it rained, hailed, and was generally moody—but we got some runs in and laughed through it all.

That evening, Simon cuddled up with the girls for a movie while I tackled our growing laundry pile. It’s been years since I’ve used quarters and washed our clothes somewhere other than home. I won’t lie—I was a little nervous about how we’d keep up with laundry on the road. At home, we practically do a load a day. But we made it work, and honestly, there was something kind of peaceful about folding clean clothes in a quiet laundromat while thinking back on the day.
Three activities, one big dose of gratitude, and lots of little moments that made it unforgettable.
